Yesterday I harvested 2 pea pods. Prof ate one and I ate one. I wish there had been more, because they were delicious! There are about a dozen more blossoms or so. We won’t have enough to eat as a side dish, but we will get some to snack on. Next year I plant many more peas than I did this year.
I have to say, I am feeling a bit discouraged. I wish I were bringing in more produce already. I know, when the time is right, we will have many tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The black beans are blossoming. We won’t get a ton of those either, but we will get a few. We might get a head or 2 of broccoli, but I am starting to think it might be too hot out for them to finish off properly. I really want to see what the buckets of potatoes are doing, but I don’t think it is time yet.
I have figured out how to try and solve my problem of no early harvests. I need to build a nice cold frame so I can over winter things, as well as start things outdoors sooner. This is my homework.
Beyond the 2 pea pods, I also harvested a few grams of lemon balm and a few grams of cilantro this past week. They are pictured in the post below about the homestead chicken dinner.

A lot of plants overwinter here with no special protection except snow. This includes, chard, parsley, kale etc… I do use a coldframe most years too. It may have been a small harvest but it still looks good!
Chard is one of my most favourite vegetables, so I hope to have some overwintering work out there. I started my seeds early, but maybe not early enough? I definitely see a cold frame in my future. I saw my Dad’s tomato plants last night and there is already fruit set on them! He failed to mention they came that way from the store. Starting from seed is slower, but I am hoping it will be worthwhile in the end
Your 2 peas were pretty, and the bean blossom too!
My kale last winter had no trouble without protection. I did put a row cover on my spinach, but nothing more. That being said I keep wishing for a cold frame myself.
I have used cold frames for years and they are well worth the investment IMO. This year I grew lettuce, spinach, radicchio, kohlrabi and other salad greens in them and really got a jump on the season with them. Kale and other greens overwinter here without protection too, so you might give them a try too.
My peas are not producing much yet either. Give it a couple weeks and you should have lots.
Thanks for all the kind words! I am just impatient
My peas will be ready for a harvest very soon. Last year I also did not have a lot of them growing. This year I will have enough to freeze.
Cold frames can be very helpful!
